According to the Swiffy announcement, Google Labs created the project thanks to "one person hacking around" — in this case an engineering intern at Google who was exploring ways to display Flash animations on non-Flash devices. Seems like a pretty smart intern, as he came up with a "compact JSON representation of the animation, which is rendered using SVG and a bit of HTML5 and CSS3."
We don't do a lot of "basic" animations — most of our Flash work leverages external XML and some pretty sophisticated Actionscript 2 or 3. So, none of our tests converted well. But it's still an intriguing project, and demonstrates the way in which innovative developers pretty quickly find ways to work over/under/around/through almost every technological barrier that appears, whether that barrier is arbitrary or organic.
